Milas Prayer Rug
mid 19th century, 185 x 126 cm, South West Anatolia, Mugla
A classic Milas with a small mihrab field and a design emphasising the border. Until 1923/24, there were still many Greeks living in the Aegean region. Their possible role in rug production in and around Milas is not mentioned in literature. However, it seems feasible that some Milas rugs were woven by Greeks.
HERRMANN, EBERHART, Seltene Orientteppiche V. Munich 1983, no. 9
Condition
Minor restorations in the white field above the mihrab. Otherwise in good condition.
