Mildred L Hermann (American, 1920-2015) Mixed Media Collage 'Reservation Blues'
Mildred L. Hermann (American, 1920–2015), Reservation Blues, 1984. Mixed media collage with thick impasto, layered paper, and thinned pigments on canvas, 56 x 48 inches (142.2 x 121.9 cm). Housed in a slim floating edge frame, this large-scale monumental work features a complex central collage focal point composed of overlapping fibrous handmade papers and structural shapes, set against a rich, earth-toned terracotta background with energetic splatters and vertical drips of electric blue and charcoal. Fully signed, titled, dated, and inscribed by the artist on the unprimed reverse canvas, the painting is mounted to heavy-duty original wooden stretcher bars with a central cross support and features an intact hanging wire ready for display. A standout piece from a pivotal year in the artist's career, Reservation Blues was prominently selected and reviewed by The New York Times in July 1984, where critics lauded its Native American thematic influences and praised its tactile, highly energetic "broken texture of pigment." Overall good condition, please see photos.
