Very rare milestone in Istrian marble, a Border Tower of the Republic of Venice in Istrian marble, carved on the two opposite sides with the representation of the Lion of St. Mark in ‘moleca’. Period: late 19th century. Work from the border area of Venice, rescued during the war and guarded by a family who resided in the area. There were two of them, one on the right and one on the left. It was customary to place these sculptures precisely in the border areas of the Serenissima, to delimit the beginning and the end of the Republic. Rare lot, unique in its kind. Almost all of these items were stolen or destroyed during the war. Small, well-proportioned and of considerable weight. Perfect as an interior or exterior decorative element.
