William Booth, of Armagh in Ireland, enlisted with the British Army in July 1795 and served in Captain Porter's company of the 40th (the 2nd Somersetshire) Regiment of Foot during the Peninsular War and is confirmed upon the Roll with correct entitlement to all clasps.
The 40th was one of those British infantry regiments which saw as much campaigning during the period as was physically possible: embarking in July 1808 for Portugal, the 40th was destined to spend the next six years in Portugal and Spain with the British Army and saw especially heavy fighting at the battles of Talavera (1809) and Salamanca (1812) and the Siege of Badajoz in the same year. In 1814 the battalion was sent to America but returned to Europe in time to participate in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. Booth saw further action here, as a Private in Captain Streton's company (thereby earning the Waterloo Medal), and survived to later join both the Second and Third Royal Veteran Battalion; he was finally discharged at Kilmainham Hospital in April 1826 after 22 years of military service.
