Millard Fillmore ALS "My few remarks at the Humbolt celebration were of no importance..."

1p, measuring 4.5" x 7.25" (sight), Buffalo, New York, dated September 21, 1869. Signed "Millard Fillmore" and addressed to General James Grant Wilson concerning his upcoming wedding. Reading in full:

"I have your favor of the 18thand congratulate you most cordially upon your anticipated marriage; and trust that it may be my good fortune at some future time to make the acquaintance of Mrs. Wilson. Please to present her my compliments and best wishes for her happiness. My few remarks at the Humboldt celebration were of no importance but I enclose a copy." The letter has been matted and framed with an engraving and facsimile signature of Fillmore to the overall size of 9.5" x 21.5". The letter has flattened mail folds and a few spots of light foxing. Minor toning to the visible front. Boldly signed, overall very good.

Ex-President Millard Fillmore had presided over the New York festivities held on September 14, 1869, to honor the centenary of Alexander von Humboldt's birth. Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) was a German polymath, geographer, naturalist, explorer, and proponent of Romantic philosophy and science, and Fillmore had been lucky enough to have met and conversed with the great man.

James Grant Wilson (1832 -1914) was born in Scotland but moved to the United States in his infancy. He became an editor and author, who founded the "Chicago Record" in 1857. Wilson served as a colonel in the Union Army during the Civil War and was later promoted to brevet brigadier general of volunteers in recognition of his service. On November 3, 1869, he married Jane Emily Searle Cogswell.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
