Ming Dynasty Glazed Pottery Footed Basin

East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. A hand-built pottery basin of a sizable and shallow form with a hexagonal body covered in smooth glaze exhibiting a jade green hue. The broad vessel rests atop a trio of cloud-form feet and has rounded walls bearing grooves that trace up to form six corresponding indentations in the flared rim. Basins like this example were perhaps used for a variety of functions like bathing children, a bird bath, a serving bowl, a preparation vessel, or even a grand funerary offering. Condition Report: Minor chips to bottoms of feet and body, with light abrasions to walls, rim, and basin, light encrustations, and minor fading to areas of original glaze pigment. Light earthen deposits and great remains of original glaze throughout.
