Miniature 19th C. Thai Gilded Glass Buddhas (2)
Southeast Asia, Thailand, "Siam", ca. 19th century CE. A beautiful pair of gilded glass seated Buddha miniature figures, both in a meditative pose and sitting upon a lotus pedestal, wearing flowing robes, and presenting traditional traits such including a high ushnisha. One is comprised of rich, translucent ruby-red glass, the other a translucent deep purple glass. As examples of Meditation Buddha, also known as a Serenity Buddha or a Calming Buddha, these Buddhas are depicted with both hands in the lap, face up, and the legs are crossed, either in a double lotus pose (with the ankles of each leg tucked behind one another in a locked position), or in a single lotus pose (where one leg rests on top of the other leg). Size: 1.25" H (3.2 cm)
