Miniature Egyptian Ptolemaic Greenstone Amulet of Baubo

[ translate ]

Egypt, Ptolemaic Period, ca. 332 to 30 BCE. An adorable example of a miniature amulet carved from mottled forest green stone with black inclusions depicting Baubo, the elderly Greek trickster goddess of humor as well as maintaining and protecting the fertility of the land. Baubo presents nude in her characteristic squatting pose while holding the sides of her distended abdomen with both hands. Her upright pose and thrown-back shoulders emphasize her breasts and overall femininity. Her countenance exhibits narrow, ovoid eyes above fleshy cheeks and a miniscule nose, and the tied-back bangs of her centrally-parted coiffure form the top of the integral suspension loop behind her neck. Size: 0.375" W x 0.625" H (1 cm x 1.6 cm)

For an example of a Baubo amulet made from glass, please see The Brooklyn Museum, accession number 37.980E

Provenance: ex-Phoenicia Holyland Antiquities, New York, New York, USA
