Miniature Egyptian Steatite Scarab w/ Thutmose III

Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty, ca. 1479 to 1425 BCE. A hand-carved steatite scarab of a miniature size that bears sinuous legs, a slender head with a frilled clypeus, and a folded, notched wing carapace, all atop an integral plinth and covered in lustrous grass green glaze; a suspension hole is drilled lengthwise through the body. Underneath the insect is an incised cartouche of Pharaoh Thutmose III as well as hieroglyphs depicting a pennant and a heart-and-windpipe. Size: 0.37" L x 0.28" W (0.9 cm x 0.7 cm)

Provenance: private Toronto, Ontario, Canada collection, by descent, acquired in Egypt in 1894 to 1896

Condition Report: Minor nicks to lower periphery, with light encrustations within some recessed areas, and very light softening to some incised hieroglyphs, otherwise intact and very good. Nice remains of glaze pigment throughout. Hieroglyphs are still visible and legible.
