Miniature Greek Xenon Pottery Olpe

Magna Graecia, southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A near-miniature olpe decorated in the Xenon style with added matte pink decoration presenting a stylized laurel leaf garland underscored by a linear band below, this decoration over a black glaze that has attained a stunning silvery iridescence. A beautiful example. Size: 2.25" W x 2.125" H (5.7 cm x 5.4 cm)

Xenon ware is a specific type of Apulian pottery, named after a vase in Frankfurt (Beazley, EVP, p. 219,1.) that is inscribed with the name: XENON. The type is distinguished by added matte pink/red decoration over black glaze.

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired early 2000s

Condition Report: Chip to rim. Minute nicks to periphery of base. Normal surface wear with minor scuffs and slight pigment loss, though much remains. Black glaze has attained a beautiful silvery iridescence.
