Miniature Post-Conquest Peruvian Stone Canopa
South America, Peru, Post-Conquest Period, ca. 16th to 18th century CE. A hand-carved stone canopa vessel shaped like a ram with a pair of curling horns flanking the head. Canopa vessels were filled with offerings and placed beneath animal pens as a protective talisman, and rams were not introduced to Peru until after the Spanish arrived.
