LOT 0076

Miniature Roman Bronze Cloaked Figure of a Youth

[ translate ]

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A solid cast bronze cloaked figure, perhaps a youth actor pretending to be a sentator, delineated with countless pleated folds of drapery gracefully cascading across his body as he makes a natural gesture, holding his right hand up to his chin, while his left arm is tucked beneath his garment. The sculptor modeled this figure in the round so that we may enjoy the rendering entirely around the figure from every angle. What's more his visage retains wonderful details: expressive eyes, a naturalistic nose, pursed lips, and a short wavy coiffure. A wonderful ancient bronze finely cast via the cire perdue (lost wax) process. Size: 2.625" H (6.7 cm); 2.875" H (7.3 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-William Froelich collection, New York, USA, acquired in the 1970s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#137214
Condition Report: Normal surface wear commensurate with age and a few minor casting flaws, but overall, the form is very nice with strong details - and the bronze has developed a rich patina.
