Mintons Majolica Monumental Stork Umbrella or Stick Stand

Impressed uppercase mark and shape no. 1916, U and cypher, black painted H. and 41., modeled by J. Hénk
Standing naturalistically on one leg atop a rocky mound, holding a struggling eel wrapped around its beak, a frog beneath its foot, the stand formed by tall bulrushes and water-lily pads. Height 40 1/2 inches.

Note:
Johann (John) Hasselmann Hénk (1846-1914), son of Christian Hénk, joined the Minton firm in 1859 as an apprentice. He was to become Minton's Chief Staff modeler, specializing in majolica animals and figures.
