Misch Kohn (American, 1916-2003), Soldiers, 1961 Color Lithograph

[ translate ]

Misch Kohn (American, 1916–2003) was a printmaker and educator recognized for expanding the technical and expressive possibilities of American printmaking after World War II. He began his career with the Works Progress Administration and later spent time in Mexico, where he encountered the work of muralists José Clemente Orozco and Diego Rivera. Kohn directed the Graphic Workshop at László Moholy-Nagy’s Institute of Design in Chicago for 22 years before relocating to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he continued teaching and producing prints. Working across wood engraving, lithography, etching, aquatint, collage, and experimental mixed processes, he moved between socially charged figurative subjects and increasingly the abstract. His work is represented in the National Gallery of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Soldiers, 1961, color lithograph printed from stone and zinc in red, black, and ochre on white Nacre paper, published by the Tamarind Lithography Workshop. Four helmet-like heads rise across the top of a tightly interlocked group. Their bodies collapse into dangling limbs and upright bars, with ochre and muted red passages running through the black drawing. Inscribed in pencil “Tamarind imp” at lower left and signed and dated “Misch Kohn 61” at lower right. The lower margin bears the Tamarind bell and printer’s blindstamp, with a spiral blindstamp farther right. “Tamarind imp” identifies this as a workshop proof outside the standard numbered edition. Sheet measures approximately 22.25 × 14.75 inches. The sheet has pronounced water staining with irregular tide lines across the upper half and down both sides, also visible on the verso. Scattered small brown spots are present, and two tape remnants remain at the upper verso. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
