The Mitchell family started to produce atlases in 1846, and continued into the early 1890's. Around 1860, S. Augustus Mitchell Jr. took over, and the atlas would be called Mitchell's New General Atlas. Included in the U.S. map section are a number of cities illustrated that are often not featured in other atlases. Phillips 870. Ownership mark in early hand on front free endpaper, previous owner's rubber stamp on front pastedown.
Condition Report: Binding somewhat worn, rubbing and abrasions to leather and cloth, some chips; hinges cracked, internal cracks, a few small tears and splits; about very good.
