1970 Château Lynch Bages, Pauillac \t. Grand Cru Classé (2) 1 bottle with a dropped cork (but is still good) Great! Vintage 1970 Score Bordeaux, Red 18/20. About the domain: Located on the outskirts of Pauillac, on one of the town’s most beautiful hilltops and overlooking the Gironde estuary, Château Lynch-Bages owes its name partly to the very old hamlet of Bages and partly to the Lynch family (of Irish descent) , which looked after the estate’s destiny from the eighteenth century onwards. Bought by the Cazes family in 1934 and already highly renowned, Lynch Bages took a further step forwards when Jean-Michel Cazes arrived at the helm in 1974. Jean-Michel Cazes invested all his energy, talent and charisma in promoting the estate whose quality and reputation he further enhanced. However, he was to become the tireless ambassador not just for his own wine but for Bordeaux and for the whole French wine industry, travelling worldwide to meet an ever increasing circle of passionate wine enthusiasts. In 2006 he handed over the running of the estate to his son Jean-Charles who continues to maintain its high standards. About the cuvée: Manual harvests, rigorous selection and ageing for 12 to 15 months produces wines with superb concentration, rich tannins and notes of spices and menthol. With time, they develop an exceptional aromatic complexity. 1975 Château Grand Puy Ducasse, Pauillac Grand Cru Classé (1) Good! Vintage 1975 Score Bordeaux, Red 17/20 About the domain: This splendid property dates back to the 17th century and was classified as a fifth growth in 1855. It enjoys a good reputation with wine enthusiasts, especially since the 1990s, when major initiatives undertaken to improve the wine began to bear fruit. The property was purchased in 1971 and totally restructured and enlarged. However, the real turning point was in 2004 when CA Grands Crus (Crédit Agricole Bank) bought the château and optimized the vineyard. At the same time, Denis Dubourdieu was called in as consultant oenologist. Today, the 40 hectares of vines are distributed over three plots with gravelly soil that, on the northern edge, adjoin the prestigious châteaux of Mouton, Lafite and Pontet-Canet. In the centre they are located around Grand Puy, and to the south, on the Saint Lambert plateau. Grand-Puy Ducasse also produces a second wine that is called Prélude à Grand-Puy Ducasse. About the cuvée: The vineyard is planted with 62% Cabernet Sauvignon and 38% Merlot. This variety of terroirs and judicious choice of grape variety make Grand-Puy Ducasse an elegant, distinguished wine, with a subtle bouquet, that reaches full expression after a few years of ageing.
