Mixtec Stone Anthropomorphic Face Bead

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Highland Southern Mexico, Mixtec culture, ca. 1200 to 1521 CE. A petite, hand-carved stone bead depicting an anthropomorphic face with pursed lips, puffy cheeks, large almond-shaped eyes, and a prominent chin, all in hues of chocolate, caramel, and toffee. An arching brow line separates each eye from the domed head, and the bead is biconically drilled behind the eyes for suspension. Size: 0.8" W x 1.125" H (2 cm x 2.9 cm).

Provenance: private collection of Dr. Evan Maurer, former Director of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (USA)
