[Moat Farm N.H.] BOUND VOLUME OF SERMONS, c. 1815

(Unusual provenance)

Provenance: Benjamin Doe’s copy, with dated owner’s inscription on inside cover and other markings; pages numbered by hand. Benjamin Doe ,1791-1880, a descendant of Nicholas Doe, lived on New Hampshire’s fabled Moat Farm, a large estate which included an island on the Lamprey River., where six generations of the Doe family operated a working farm and tannery. During the 1820’s Doe authored a half dozen almanacs titled Doe's Newtonian Almanack, and Astronomical Ephemeris, and The Christian Register and Almanack. The farm and its lands remained in the Doe family until the early 20th century, when it was largely bequeathed to the Town of Durham and the contents of the home auctioned; a fire leveled the place in 1916. Today, Doe Farm is a forest park and nature preserve.

Benjamin (born 1791) was a teacher of ‘mathematics, natural and experimental philosophy, astronomy and languages’. Benjamin was preceptor of Kingston Academy before returning to live at the Moat Farm. Benjamin served two terms as town selectman, two years in the NH Legislature and served for many years on the superintending committee that administered Durham’s ten district schools….Benjamin Doe published ‘Doe’s Newtonian Almanac’ during the 1820s. …Doe also published instructional pamphlets for the teaching of mathematics, land surveying and use of a new improved slide rule. To meet the wishes of both places, it was concluded to strike off a part of the addition, for each, with only a difference in title page, and a few passages of appropriate application. “ Final four pages are titled, right hand of fellowship, by Reverend Nathan Parker, minister of the South Church, Portsmouth.
