Moche Bi-chrome Figural Jar w/ Seated Shaman

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, ca. 400 to 600 CE. A finely preserved example of a hand-built pottery jar with a planar base, a bulbous body with a tapering profile and a sloped shoulder, a broad cylindrical neck, and a thick rim surrounding the interior cavity. The front of the vessel body depicts a red-slipped shaman in a seated meditative pose who has a red-and-white skirt, an incised pectoral necklace divided into sixteen rectangular segments, and a slender rattle with five hanging rattle balls. The broad countenance features coffee-bean-shaped eyes with closed lids, an aquiline nose, thin lips flanked with shallow nasolabial folds, and protruding ears, and the entire figure is huddled beneath a hooded, cream-hued cloak. Size: 6" W x 8.625" H (15.2 cm x 21.9 cm)
