Moche Bichrome Stirrup Vessel, ex-Museum

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Northern coast Peru, Moche, Phase IV, ca. 500 to 700 CE. A hand-built stirrup vessel made from terracotta that is slip painted in hues of beige and red. The lightly carinated body rests on a flat base, and a curved handle arches from the shoulder to the neck. The narrow neck rises straight from the center of the body. Surrounding the neck base and radiating down the shoulder is a 7-pointed star with circular tips. All is painted in a red slip on a beige ground which makes for a striking motif! Size: 6.05" Diameter x 9" H (15.4 cm x 22.9 cm)

Provenance: ex Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA, donated to Ashland University between July 1994 to December 1998

Condition Report: Repaired and restored with overpainting. Handle is reattached to neck and shoulder. Overpainting over break lines. Chips on rim around the mouth. Abrasions and flaking of upper layer on handle. Repairs are well done and not easily discernable. Great preservation of pigments!
