Moche Bichrome Stirrup Vessel w/ Spotted Deer

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, Phase III, ca. 350 to 550 CE. A hand-built pottery vessel with a squat foot, an ovoid body with a central band of creamy yellow-white pigment, and a stirrup-shaped handle surmounted with a cylindrical spout bearing a gently flared rim. Presented in hues of burgundy and cream, each half of the vessel features a right-facing deer in relief with an almond-shaped eye, bent legs, an upturned tail, and a tab-shaped ear, all accentuated with dozens of applied yellow-white spots. Size: 5.3" W x 8.375" H (13.5 cm x 21.3 cm)

Provenance: ex-Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA, donated to Ashland University between July 1994 to December 1998
