Moche Copper Mace Head

Pre-Columbian, north coast Peru, Moche, ca. 100 to 700 CE. A fine example of an intimidating mace head cast from copper via the lost wax technique. Nine bar-shaped fins project outward from around the central hafting slot and were meant to inflict maximum damage to an adversary no matter from which direction the mace was swung. Size: 3.1" W (7.9 cm); 4.25" H (10.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected from 1950s to 1960s

Condition Report: Loss to tip of one projection as shown. Nicks, pitting, and a few stable fissures to body and projections, with light encrustations within some recessed areas. Nice patina throughout.
