Moche / Huari Bichrome Cargador Aryballos

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche to Huari/Wari, ca. 400 to 650 CE. A very sweet bichrome effigy vessel depicting a cargador figure who is carrying his load via a tumpline delineated in relief (with sections that are almost in the round) around his high relief head, holding his arms which are almost in the round upward and adjusting/securing the tumpline with his hands. His visage is skillfully modeled with almond-shaped eyes, perforated pupils, a protruding nose, and full closed lips. The body of the vessel is piriform in shape with twin pierced lug handles at the juncture between the body and the conical neck. All is covered in red slip save the cream-hued tumpline and bracelets adorning his wrists. A wonderful example from this ancient Peruvian culture. Size: 5.5" W at widest point x 5.625" H (14 cm x 14.3 cm)
