Moche I Pottery Monkey Effigy Stirrup Vessel

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, Phase I, ca. 100 to 300 CE. A charming mold-formed pottery vessel with a planar base, a spherical body with a bulbous shoulder, a stirrup-shaped handle, and a narrow spout with an everted rim. Surmounting the top of the highly burnished vessel is an adorable stylized monkey with lengthy limbs and delineated fingers and toes, a slender body, and a sinuous tail curling around the back. The raised head bears almond-shaped eyes that flank a slender nose, puffy jowls, and cupped ears beneath a smooth top. Size: 4.75" W x 7.2" H (12.1 cm x 18.3 cm).

Provenance: private Copeland collection, Boulder, Colorado, USA, acquired before 1990
