Having graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1916 Charles Burchfield moved to Buffalo New York in 1921 and was hired as a designer by the wallpaper company H.M. Birge & Sons Co. He stayed at Birge & Co. until 1929 designing some of their most popular wallpaper patterns including this pattern called "Modernistic." Examples of Burchfield's "Modernistic" wallpaper pattern can be found at the Cooper Hewitt Museum and the Burchfield Penney Art Center.
