[ translate ]

Description

Columbo
signed 'M M Latham 36' (lower right)
oil on canvas
60 x 74.5cm

Provenance:
Phillips & MacConnal Ltd, 26 Burlington Arcade, London;
Landwade Hall, Exning, Suffolk

Footnote:

Columbo’s (1931-1954) career lasted from 1933 until 1934. He won nine out of eleven races including a Classic win at the 2000 Guineas in 1934. In 1937 he was sold privately by Sir Alec Black for 510 guineas to Lord Glanely. Lord Glanely entered him into his stud at Exning where he sired two Classic winners, Happy Knight (2000 Guineas) and Dancing Time (1000 Guineas).

Condition report:

Framed 81 x 96cm

Oil on canvas which is unlined with an artists’ supplier stamp for Roberson & Co on the reverse. The canvas tension is slightly slack and there are minor undulations across the surface. The paint layers are in a very good, stable condition. White efflorescence is starting to form in areas of impasto, although not visually disturbing, this could be reduced through careful surface cleaning. The painting is unvarnished and has a matte surface finish. There is a light layer of dirt present with a few pale accretions.
