First state of this charming copper engraved map of the continent based on the Paolo Forlani map. The continent is depicted with a vastly elongated extension of the eastern seaboard and a rather odd bulge in the California peninsula with Giapan (Japan) just offshore. The map has a stippled engraved sea in the Italian style and is decorated with a strapwork title cartouche, compass rose and two wild-looking sea creatures. On a sheet of Italian text measuring 7.6 x 11.5". According to Burden, this edition was published in 1576 or 1590 as evidenced by the last line of text above the map reading "Mondo Nuouo."See also lot 713 for Philip Burden's reference work, The Mapping of North America, and lot 692 for Frank Manasek's Collecting Old Maps which both discuss this map.
