Monogramist AW, attributed to
A Pair of Landscapes with "The Good Samaritan" and "Tobias and the Angel"
Oil on canvas (relined). 59 x 85 cm each.
Provenance
Private collection, Belgium.
This pair of large-format Flemish landscapes belongs stylistically, in both its figures and its landscape, to a group of paintings traditionally attributed to the Antwerp painter Abraham Willemsen (1614–1672).
According to Jahel Sanzsalazar ('Identificada una pintura de Abraham Willemsens con atribución a Willem van Herp', Boletín Museo e Instituto Camón Aznar 101 (2008), pp. 259–268), however, the large group of works frequently signed "A.W." or "AW.IN.F." should be attributed to a different artist, the "Monogrammist A.W." (possibly Andriaen Willenhout).
