Montanus, Arnoldus. Arx Carolina, Bird's-eye view

Amsterdam, late 17th century, a copperplate engraving on laid paper with hand color, the scene depicts a bustling "Fort Carolina" that was situated somewhere along the southern coast of North America between today's Charleston, South Carolina and Jacksonville, Florida. The waving flags on the foreground ships are clearly Spanish and the bastion fort is similar to the Castillo de San Marcos guarding St. Augustine, Florida.
Sheet 16 x 19 in.; DOA 21 x 23.75 in.
From the estate of the late Mary L. Hill, Chapel Hill, North Carolina
Additional high-resolution photos are available at LelandLittle.com
Condition Report: The sheet, intact with full margins, was unfortunately backed by an imprinted rectangle of cardboard about 50 years ago; the words and vertical line pattern on the board transferred to the verso of the sheet, which also assumed overall dark toning; vertical fold line; a few spots present.
