The 4810 edition features a tiger's eye gem, a reference to a pendant worn by Francois I, which contrasts with the beautiful black resin that adorns its cap and barrel. Crowned in 1515 in the cathedral of Reims, Francois Ier was the first monarch of the French Renaissance. During his reign, he allowed a considerable rise in the arts and culture. Founder of the Collège de France in Paris, an institution that still exists today, he introduced the study of Latin, Greek and Hebrew in France. In 1539, he signed an ordinance that made French the language of administration, instead of Latin. Other world-famous works created by Michelangelo, Titian and Raphael were also brought to France at the request of Francois I. Many Renaissance artists accepted his invitation before coming to work at the French court, under his patronage.
