Monumental Carved Bone Ship Model, ca. 1850-60

Antique American whalebone ship model (circa 1850-60) of a three-masted merchant ship of the type that was used to transport materials from New England ports up and down the East Coast to Florida and the Caribbean. Rare in size, this is an individual effort of an unknown craftsman who was possibly a seaman on such a vessel, and is a superior example of American scrimshaw. Provenance: Sold by Ed Weissman, a well-known antiques dealer with a shop in Portsmouth, NH for over 55 years. [42" H x 54" W x 18" D]. The ship has been re-rigged, and the flag, wooden cradle and plexiglass case are new. All other materials are original. Overall condition is very good with some cracks and wear; oxidation to metal; some cords loose.
