Description: One (1) late-19th/early-20th century, monumental Japanese, beautifully patinated bronze censer, representing one of the Shitenno, Lord of the East, Jikokuten. Cast in multiple parts, with the main combined parts consisting of the censer cover and crane, the censer urn and parts including the dragons, Jikokuten, the base with the two Jyaki (demons), sword, and the ball and snake scepter. Some parts were cast and then adjoined together permanently, for example the base and demons. There is a paper shield-form U.S. Customs label under Jikokuten, which was hand filled stating Serial "2452," Lot "101 (or) 121." I have requested any information about the date of this type of label from the U.S. Customs Museum Foundation. If this information is received, it will be updated on this listing and/or provided to the winner of this auction. Because this is a monumental piece, this sale is "as is, where is/on-site, and all sales are final." The winner will be responsible for arranging the pick up, packing, shipping transport and insurance for this item. If you need our help, please see the shipping terms in this listing for more details before bidding.
Measurements: 78 1/2" (h) x 25" (w) x 21" (d)/199.39 cm x 63.5 cm x 53.34 cm. The weight was not provided but is estimated at about 200 pounds/90.72 Kg. I have requested that the owner weigh each part individually and provide that total. If I receive that from the owner, I will post an update with that information. However, the bidder should be aware that we have only estimated this weight at this time, and it could be higher or lower than our estimate.
Condition: The condition of the overall piece is good to very good. There are condition issues that are commensurate with the age and wear, and we will outline those we have noticed, but there may be others we have missed, so please examine all of the listing's images, and/or request all of the raw images before bidding. The crane and censer top have been repaired. The crane's legs appear to have been repaired at least twice, with the latest attempt using metal pins, stabilizing the left leg well. The reticulated censer top has some cracks that were repaired long ago and more recently. The "crown" around the top of the censer urn has a missing "arch" section, and a repaired crack. Counting the dragons from the center front going clockwise around, the 5th dragon has a repair to its front left elbow, and the 6th dragon has what may be a very slightly loose left rear leg. There is one missing tassel component from one of the tassels, and two of the tassel hanging hooks have been replaced. Some of the dragons, areas on the demons, and other parts have casting errors, and they are visible on the bottom of the platform as well. The sword was broken and repaired with a pin.
Provenance: By descent to the current owners. The piece belonged to the owner's parents and they remember seeing it in the parent's house they moved into in the 70 s.
