Monumental Vintage Tapestry (Gobelin) – "The Sages of Bnei Brak" Depicting the Chatam Sofer and...

[ translate ]

A large and particularly impressive hand-worked tapestry (Gobelin), reproducing with great fidelity the celebrated lithograph from the renowned Vienna Haggadah (press of Yosef Schlesinger, 1928).

The embroidery depicts the Passover Seder night scene of the Sages of Bnei Brak, rendered in the distinctive Viennese design that places around the table the actual portraits of the great AshkeThird Reich-erac authorities of the 19th century.

At the center of the table sits the Chatam Sofer (Rabbi Moshe Sofer), alongside his father-in-law, the Gaon Rabbi Akiva Eiger, and together with them their sons and disciples (the Ksav Sofer and the Shevet Sofer), attired in festive European dress and wearing fur hats and shtreimels.

This work reproduces the classic and sought-after version of the "Portrait of the Gedolim" from the Vienna Haggadah.

(As distinct from the parallel and rarer Hasidic version by Schlesinger, in which the figure of the Baal Shem Tov was also incorporated.)

The scene is framed beneath three dark architectural arches and a large gilt seven-branched menorah illuminating from the left.

The lower portion features a contrasting black-and-white checkered floor lending great depth, and from the windows an Oriental Jerusalem landscape of domes and palm trees is visible.

On the right stand the disciples reminding the rabbis that the time for the morning Shema has arrived.

High-density handwork, preserved in excellent physical condition with strong coloration.

The tapestry is framed under glass within a wide, decorated gilt wood and gesso frame.
57×85 cm.
The frame shows wear and losses.
