[ translate ]

The Collection of Geraldine and Harold Alden
Morris Louis
1912 - 1962

Notes of Recession
Magna on canvas
91 by 57 in.
231.1 by 144.8 cm.
Executed in 1961.

Condition Report:
This work is in good condition overall. The colors are bright, fresh and clean. There are several pinpoint staple holes visible along the upper edge of the canvas from the time of execution and artist’s working method. The unprimed canvas appears slightly uneven in areas, which is inherent to the artist’s chosen support. There is a slightly darker tone along the top edge and a faint vertical striation along the top half of the right edge. Under very close inspection, faint horizontal striations are visible along the right edge, there is an uneven horizontal tone visible in the lower center of the right edge, a few pinpoint spot accretions are visible in the unpainted canvas, and there are four light surface abrasions visible along the bottom edge. Under Ultraviolet light inspection, the aforementioned horizontal striations along the right edge fluoresce darkly. Also under Ultraviolet light inspection, an approximately 12 inch area in the upper right yellow fluoresces lightly and is not visible in normal viewing conditions. Framed.

Framed dimensions: 91⅞ by 58¼ in. (233.4 by 149.2 cm.)

Provenance:
Estate of the artist
Jeanette Kear, Chevy Chase
André Emmerich Gallery, New York
Acquired from the above in January 1983 by the present owner
