LOT 302

Mourning Virgin, Circle of Lucas van Leyden

[ translate ]

Property from a Family Collection
Circle of Lucas van Leyden
Mourning Virgin

oil on panel
panel: 10⅛ by 8⅝ in.; 25.7 by 21.9 cm.
framed: 16 by 14⅜ in.; 40.6 by 36.5 cm.

Condition Report:
The panel is made of a single vertical board. It is uncradled, planar, and beveled on three of the four edges. The paint surface is stable, and the image reads strongly beneath a slightly discolored varnish. There are many detailed passages that are well preserved, though the darker tones have lost some definition in areas, for example in the central portion of her costume. A very faint vertical grain is visible, primarily in the background. Inspection under UV reveals a slightly milky varnish, as well as some fine, isolated and sensitively applied cosmetic strokes of more modern retouching scattered only here and there. For example, there is one thin stroke of retouching in the Virgin's proper left cheek, a more concentrated area in her proper right shoulder, some thin strokes in the darker tones of the central portion of her costume, and some strokes in the background to attend to the vertical wood grain. Offered in a simply carved gilt frame.
