Catalogue Note:
Sam Cox, also known as Mr Doddle, transforms blank canvases into a pandemonium of playful characters, patterns, and details with his intricate doodles, as evident in the present lot. A bold composition of spray paint on canvas, Mr Doodle creates spontaneously, lines transforming into forms without stencils or guides.
Reminiscent of Keith Haring, and citing an admiration for Banksy, Mr Doodle is nonetheless set apart from such artists and his contemporaries such as Kaws or Takashi Murakami by his apolitical stance.
“I want it to be a happy visual language that everyone around the world can enjoy and feel involved in.” - Mr Doodle.
To date, Mr Doodle has launched several collaborations with a variety of notable brands such as Fendi, Puma, and Samsung. In December of 2019, Sotheby’s Hong Kong hosted an exhibition titled ‘Mr Doodle Invades’ featuring 52 standout paintings inspired by influential artworks from across art history. The sale occurred alongside a live doodling event, further heightening the artist’s popularity.
