Mujur Prayer Rug
second half 19th century, 165 x 122 cm, Central Anatolia
This Mujur prayer rug with an open red mihrab field, a steep stepped arch, a green area above it and an aubergine-ground panel at the very top is a particularly colourful example. The good condition of the pile suggests that the rug was used as a wall hanging. The notion that rugs woven in a niche design were always used as prayer mats is a myth.
ASLANAPA, OKTAY, One Thousand Years of Turkish Carpets. Istanbul 1988, pl. 146
Condition
Some restorations in the red field. Otherwise in good condition.
