Naar en te Way-Lima en Kedondong. 68 Photo's uit de Lampongs, Rotterdam, [1898], 68 mounted albumen photographs on thick card leaves, depicting Dutch coffee plantations, administrative buildings, brickmaking, etc. in the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia), each photograph with printed caption and date below, title page and list of contents at front of volume, tissue-guard to each photograph, original half dark brown morocco over green cloth, upper cover decorated in gilt, rubbed and some marks, modern reback to match, with an autograph letter from the author loosely inserted at front of volume, small oblong 4to (21.5 x 27 cm)

Rare photographic record of the coffee industry run by the Dutch colonial administration, in Way Lima and Kedondong in the Lampong province of Sumatra, Indonesia. Loosely inserted at the front of the album is an autograph letter from the author to an unidentified recipient dated Rotterdam 26 November 1898, written in Dutch, single folded sheet, edged in black, 21 x 13.5 cm. The letter (in approximate translation) reads in part: “Dear Sir, It is my honour to offer you a copy of my photo album of the Lampongs. It saddens me greatly that my late father was never able to see the completed work. We spent more than a year making the preparations and reviewing every detail and he was looking forward to the completion. The album will, I hope, bring back good memories of my dear father who held you in great esteem and greatly appreciated your friendship”.
