Muonionalusta Meteorite Slice Iron, IVA Norrbottens, Sweden - (67° 48'N, 23° 6'E) Found: 1906 In general terms, the Muonionalusta Meteorite offers a number of unique characteristics. This Iron is considered an arctic meteorite, is probably THE oldest known meteorite on Earth, fell probably a million years ago, represents the first occurrence of the rare mineral Stishovite in an Iron meteorite, and boasts a rather "tight" Widmanstätten pattern, when etched, that is highly complex and artistic as well as visually captivating. This superb slice of the fine, octahedrite weighing 266.9 grams offers all of the superlative attributes for such material, with a spectacular latticework patterning and two substantial clasts of Troilite adding to the overall complexity of the exquisite specimen. Its shape is sublime as well, and both sides of this representation are "finished," adding a further dimension to the impressive display slab. The sizable piece measures nearly 7 inches (18 cm) at maximum point. While relatively thin, this slice is robust and has a sizable surface area relative to the weight of the material. Measurements: 6.30 x 6.10 x 0.08 inches (16.00 x 15.50 x 0.20 cm), weighs 266.9 grams HID09710052018 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
