Murray Meteorite Carbonaceous Chondrite, CM2 Calloway County, Kentucky, USA Fall: September 20, 1950 Two interesting aspects about this uncommon chondrite concern its provenance. It was recovered in the unlikely location of Calloway County, Kentucky, and it has a label indicating it was once at the Institute of Meteoritics at the University of New Mexico. Back in 1950, witnesses in neighboring Illinois watched as a fireball exploded resulting in pieces of the Murray CM2 falling near the city of Murray, Kentucky. Part of a larger group, such carbonaceous chondrites contain complex organic compounds. This delightful end cut displays tiny "chondrules" of greenish Olivine sprinkled throughout the cut surface. The tactile exterior is granular in nature, with a deep, rich, black coloration. This specimen weighs slightly over 10 grams and is an unusual, important and collectible meteorite. Striated surface saw marks are visible at certain angles.
