Lower Burma, ca. 1900, of traditional form, decorated with embossed lobed cartouches containing the signs of the zodiac on a leafy ground, below a beaded band and floral scrolling rim, the underside with engraved circular maker's mark of tri-lobed floral sprig.

Notes: The appearance of the Naga instead of the dragon of the Chinese zodiac indicates the Buddhist cycle used in Southeast Asia. Myanmar did not observe this cycle after the Pagan period which ended in the 13th century, so its appearance here suggests a cultural association with neighboring Thailand along the lower Myanmar peninsula or nearby Cambodia or Malaysia.
