Myles Birket Foster RWS (1825-1899)
Crystal Palace
Watercolour heightened with white, 4cm by 10.5cm

Provenance: Leger Galleries, London; Christies, The London Sale, 24th May 2002, Lot 88

Exhibited: Ledger Galleries, London, February 1969

The Great Exhibition of 1851 in Hyde Park was a celebration of design and engineering from across the globe and the first large scale effort to promote technology to the masses. With exhibits from twenty-five countries, the show was housed in the famous dedicated glass and iron structure designed by Joseph Paxton. Following the huge success of the exhibition, the Crystal Palace was re-erected in Sydenham in 1854 where it continued to thrive, including holding the world's first aeronautical exhibition and Festival of Empire to mark the coronation of George V and Queen Mary. The Sydenham site was tragically destroyed by fire in 1936.
This beautifully delicate watercolour by Myles Birket Foster documents the enhanced Crystal Palace in Sydenham, with the addition of the 284-ft. water towers which supplied the fountains shown in the foreground.
