N. Krishna Reddy (American, 1925-2018), Landscape, 1965 Color Lithograph

[ translate ]

N. Krishna Reddy (American, 1925–2018) was a painter, sculptor, and master printmaker who played a major role in the development of multicolor intaglio printing. After studying at Kala Bhavana in Santiniketan, he moved to Europe and joined Stanley William Hayter’s Atelier 17 in Paris, where his experiments helped refine viscosity printing, a process that allows several colors to be printed from a single plate by varying ink consistency and roller pressure. Reddy’s prints often draw on natural processes such as flowing water, erosion, growth, and cellular change. He later taught printmaking at New York University, and his work is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the National Gallery of Art.

Landscape, 1965, color lithograph on Arches wove paper. A layered landscape in pale blue, deep blue, and muted green is built from sweeping washes, scratched and incised-looking lines, and dense vertical strokes suggesting wooded forms reflected across water, with loosely drawn circular shapes extending along the foreground. Printed by Kenneth Tyler and published by the Tamarind Lithography Workshop, Los Angeles, in an edition of 20, with nine additional Tamarind impressions. Inscribed in graphite along the lower margin “Tamarind Impression” and signed “N. Krishna Reddy,” with the Tamarind Lithography Workshop and Kenneth Tyler blindstamps at lower left. The verso bears the graphite workshop number “1229,” identifying the work as Tamarind catalogue no. 1229. “Tamarind Impression” identifies this impression as one retained by the workshop outside the regular numbered edition. Sheet measures approximately 25.375 x 17.5 inches. The sheet shows light toning and handling with minor edge wear, a crease at the lower left corner, and three remnants of old mounting tape along the upper verso. Image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
