[NATIVE AMERICAN] Blackfoot (Niitsitapi) Beaded Boy’s Outfit
Northern Plains, likely late nineteenth–early twentieth century. Note: This lot is accompanied by a modern headdress included for display.
Attributed to the Blackfoot, or Niitsitapi, the dress set offered here belongs to the artistic traditions of the northern Plains, encompassing the homelands of the Siksika, Kainai, and Northern and Southern Piikani across present-day Canada and the United States. The combination of richly worked surfaces and emphatic color contrasts offers a compelling expression of personal adornment and tribal tradition.
Distinguished by their vivid turquoise-blue palette and carefully ordered geometric ornament, the dress accessories that comprise this lot include a beaded hide belt, knife, knife sheath and small pouch, paired armbands, and a graduated loop necklace. Contrasting passages of dark blue, red, orange, and yellow articulate the densely beaded surfaces, creating a beautiful sustained interplay between broad fields of color and a finely delineated pattern.
The belt is ornamented with paired vertical bars and a stepped geometric device, while the suspended knife sheath combines blue curvilinear forms with red lozenges against an exposed hide ground. Closely spaced horizontal stripes enliven the armbands, which retain hide ties and white fur pendants with dark tips. The necklace forms the visual center of the display: its descending blue loops, punctuated by orange-red sections, lend movement and depth to the more architectural arrangement of the accompanying beadwork. Cut hide fringe provides a further contrast of texture.
A lovely set that is ready for display.
