[NATIVE AMERICAN] Comanche Infant in Cradleboard
Photographer unidentified. Late 19th or early 20th century.
Photograph of a Comanche infant secured in a hide-covered cradleboard, posed upright against a small studio table. The child's face appears within a deep, rounded hood, beneath a light-colored cap with a scalloped edge. Crossed lacing runs down the front of the carrier, while two tall, pointed wooden uprights rise above the hood, their surfaces ornamented with geometric arrangements of small studs.
The plain backdrop and close composition give particular prominence to the cradleboard's construction and decoration. Mounted on gray cardstock with a recessed rectangular border. The reverse bears faint, indistinct markings.
