[NATIVE AMERICAN] Plains War Club with Double-Pointed Stone Head

A Plains Stone-Headed War Club with Hide-Wrapped Haft and Pendant Ornament.

A striking Plains war club with a dark, smoothly finished stone head tapering toward opposed points. Secured transversely by a broad hide binding, the head forms an emphatic crosspiece above a long, pale, hide-covered haft. Narrow hide strips and a red fibrous pendant extend from the lower end, introducing a loose, flowing element to an otherwise spare composition.

The head’s elongated symmetry is the defining feature of the piece. Its nearly black surface contrasts sharply with the lighter binding and handle, while the transition from the broad middle to the pointed ends gives the object a particularly forceful silhouette. The wrapping at the junction integrates the head and haft without obscuring the stone’s carefully shaped profile.

Stone-headed war clubs occupied a longstanding place in Plains martial traditions, combining carefully shaped stone with wood and hide to create effective weapons for close combat. Their forms evolved with changing methods of warfare: as mounted combat became increasingly common during the eighteenth century, longer handles provided greater reach both for horsemen and for those confronting mounted opponents on foot. The elongated haft and opposed points of the present example are consistent with this broader tradition.
