[NATIVE AMERICAN] c. 1890 Sioux Man’s Fully Beaded Vest with Tipi Designs

A Sioux Man’s Fully Beaded Vest. Northern Plains, circa 1890. Glass beads, textile lining and bindings, and hide ties.

A striking man’s vest worked across the front and back in closely set white glass beads, with geometric and tipi-like designs in blue, green, yellow, and red. Narrow reddish beaded borders follow the neckline, arm openings, front edges, and hem. Hide ties and pale pendants accompany the front opening, while the interior reveals a combination of plain and patterned fabrics.

The front decoration is arranged symmetrically. Small blue devices occupy the shoulders, above larger green and yellow triangular forms with branching lateral extensions. Below, groups of three lodge-like motifs rise from a common baseline. A narrow blue band near the hem supports regularly spaced descending lines with small red and blue terminals. The reverse develops these elements across a broader field, adding a central sequence of smaller blue and red devices between the larger paired compositions.

Beaded vests offered Sioux makers a substantial surface on which to adapt geometric and representational imagery to an introduced garment form. Here, the maker has allowed generous white intervals between the principal motifs, giving the designs a clear visual hierarchy despite the extensive bead coverage. Scattered losses expose portions of the underlying construction, but the relationship between the front and back schemes remains readily apparent. The vest is particularly engaging for the way its repeated lodge forms turn the garment into a continuous field of ornament.
