[NATIVE AMERICAN] Sioux Child’s Wool Dress with Cowrie Shell Decoration, Probably c. 1920

A Sioux Child’s Shell-Decorated Dress. Northern Plains, circa 1920. Machine-sewn wool cloth, cowrie shells, and ribbon.

A child’s dress of deep blue wool cloth, fashioned with a gently widening body and broad, short sleeves. Pale lavender-pink ribbon frames the neckline and elongated front opening. Cowrie shells are distributed across the upper front in an expansive, curved arrangement, with related decoration over the shoulders and back. Their pale surfaces stand prominently against the dark fabric.

Two further rows of shells encircle the lower portion above narrow pink, lavender, and yellow ribbon bands. Paired ribbon stripes finish the sleeve ends. The concentration of ornament at the upper body and hem leaves a broad central expanse of uninterrupted wool, giving the small garment a particularly clear organization.

The use of cowrie shells with wool cloth and ribbon is documented in Sioux dress of the early twentieth century. The machine-sewn construction reflects the incorporation of newer dressmaking methods alongside applied shell ornament. At a child’s scale, the broad distribution of the shells and the fine ribbon borders create a considered balance of texture and color, with the natural variation of the individual shells enlivening the otherwise orderly arrangement.
