[NATIVE AMERICANS]. GOFF, O.S., photographer. A group of 2 cabinet cards of Chief Gall and Low Dog. Bismarck, Dakota Territory.

Approx. 4 x 5 7/8 in. cabinet photographs on cardstock mounts (toning, soiling, spotting throughout; soiling and edge/corner wear to mounts; Chief Gall with horizontal crease). Both feature Goff's pictorial imprint on verso along with ink inscriptions: "Chief Gall" (mount recto). "Principle Chief in the Custer fight, June 26 1876" (verso). -- "Low Dog" (mount recto). "This Chief did the fighting in The Custer Fight, June 26 1876" (verso). -- Together, 2 cabinet cards.

Low Dog (ca 1846-1894) was an Oglala Lakota chief who fought with Sitting Bull at the Little Bighorn. He was the source of the quote often attributed to Sitting Bull: "This is a good day to die. Follow me." Low Dog surrendered in 1881 and lived out his days at Standing Rock.
