UNIDENTIFIED. Native American Woman, Oaxacan Serape, Baby, c. 1858. 4.25x3.25" quarter plate daguerreotype in case.

Daguerreotypes of Native Americans if extremely rare. Most were made in Florida, Upper New York State and Ottowa, Canada. The Oaxacan Serape like the Daguerreotype dates from the 1856-1860 period. In this view taken in the Southwest or Mexico there is a relationship between the woman and baby and a still life composition involving a carefully folded Oaxacan Serape.
Condition Report: Good, some tarnish. Conserved by Thomas Edmondson in 2018, report available on request.
